XBRL converter facilitates financial statement analysis

The progressive adoption of the XBRL standards has ensured that financial statement analysis systems are becoming increasingly attractive for the processing of electronic company reports. The unification through the XBRL format allows for a reduction in processing costs, amongst others. The balance sheet classification scheme of the so-called XBRL taxonomies also reduces the risk of error in the interpretation of the report positions.

ABZ Reporting offers a XBRL converter that can enable your existing balance sheet analysis applications to tap in to analysed electronic company reports in XBRL. The converter has proven itself over a number of years at data processing in the widely-used balance sheet analysis system BARS bewährt hat. The software now also allows XBRL data to be loaded in to the EBIL-System of the DSV through the provision of an EBIL adapter.

Easy-to-use software interface.

The software's user interface allows the creation of position mappings in the balance sheet analysis format, without the need for particular IT skills. In the graphical user interface, business users can simply and comfortably specify or change the rules for the processing of electronic company reports with drag and drop. Business users are not dependent on a permanent dialogue with the development department, as is common with many comparable systems. Additional accounting standards and new versions can be integrated via configuration without special adaptation efforts.

The majority of the mappings are usually a question of simple position allocations, with which one or more positions from the input format are aggregated into a position of the analysis scheme. Even the most complex mapping functions are supported by a special function library, so that the information required for the analysis scheme can be fully generated.

Here's how it works.

XBRL is a standard used for the electronic transmission of corporate financial statements. The definition of a data exchange format for a particular accounting standard is called XBRL taxonomy. The XBRL taxonomies for national and international accounting standards are freely available. They can be used by the reporting company or providers of corporate information, without having to worry about the interpretation and differentiation of individual reporting positions.
With the ReportFactory XBRL Converter, the XBRL taxonomies can be used for importing data into an existing balance sheet analysis scheme. The XBRL taxonomies used are configured for use in projects and displayed in the user interface with mapping rules to the analysis scheme.

A background process monitors the incoming data for errors (validation) and handles the conversion and importation of the incoming data into the balance sheet analysis format.

How will your balance analysis system be XBRL-enabled?

Balance sheet analysts can benefit from the availability of standardised electronic business reports by making their existing balance analysis system XBRL-enabled with an upstream converter. For this, the following steps must be implemented:

Step 1: Creating an XBRL taxonomy (target taxonomy) for the existing balance sheet analysis scheme

Step 2: Development of a Data Import Adapter to load the XBRL data from the target taxonomy
into the balance sheet analysis system

Step 3: Creation of mappings of the accounting taxonomies used to the target taxonomy

Through step 1, the existing balance sheet analysis scheme will be compatible with the mapping of existing XBRL-based data exchange formats 'without media disruption'! With step 2, XBRL data can be imported at any time into the existing system.
Steps 1 and 2 are a one-time effort and may be omitted if a taxonomy for the destination format and/or an appropriate adapter (e.g. for EBIL) are already available. Just ask us by whether your desired target format is already supported by the XBRL converter from ABZ Reporting!
In step 3, the mapping of the positions of the source taxonomy to the target taxonomy are edited in a graphical user interface and tested with the input data. Even in operation, the user interface is used to allow a straight forward fault analysis. For this purpose the results of the initial examination are integrated into the report visualisation and faulty input documents are automatically screened for a more detailed investigation.

The number of corporate financial statements available in XBRL is growing not only internationally, but also in Germany. This growth has mainly developed through the submission obligations or facilitations implemented by authorities or regulators, through the use of XBRL for publication of the electronic federal gazette (Bundesanzeiger) or the requirement for companies to submit future e-balance sheets in XBRL to the tax authorities. It is therefore worthwhile for analysts to adjust to the processing of XBRL financial statements early on.
